Employment, training and education

We aim to equip offenders to tackle the critical barriers they face in finding and sustaining employment.

The 2007 Skills for Life awards

110 people in Cambridgeshire, who were once offenders, have achieved national awards in literacy and numeracy (to GCSE level).

Those receiving awards had to work hard to achieve their qualification, but they have also taken a major step on the road away from crime and towards getting a decent job within the local community.

Presenting the awards Jon Nay, Area Director for the Cambridgeshire Learning Skills Council, said: "The employment prospects of offenders are significantly below those of the community in general. The acquisition of relevant learning and skills leading to sustained employment is a significant factor in reducing re-offending."

Skills for Life

The Skills for Life Programme caters for all levels of ability, we work closely with our partners to deliver a vast range of courses. These range from GCSE and NVQ qualifications to special courses for offenders who are dyslexic or those for whom English is not their first language.

There are also specialist courses such as Maintaining your Tenancy, an eight-week programme for offenders with housing needs, which includes money management and independent living skills.

A Job Club also runs weekly at various sites across the county and includes tuition on how to search for a job, CV writing and goal setting.

Partners include:

  • The Learning Skills Council
  • The Drugs Intervention Programme
  • Peterborough Regional College
  • Peterborough College of Adult Education
  • West Anglia College
  • The Peterborough Learning Partnership
  • Next Step
  • Connexions
  • The Offender Learning and Skills Unit
  • Littlehey, Whitemoor and Peterborough Prisons
